MT-28V3 Design Lead, Muneyuki Matsuyoshi

Driving the evolution of the most advanced wedge available
When changing wedge models, there are always pros and cons. But we want most is to constantly provide a better product for our users, and this is what we kept in mind constantly through development of the MT-28 V3. We use our usual milling process to flatten the face, and the carving process of the grooves is unchanged, but this time we take about twice as much time for milling the face. With what is called mirror-face milling, the milling blade moves much slower for a huge increase in precision flatness of the face. A flatter face means sharper groove edges, which in turn means added spin.
For this wedge, we are offering two models, a plated model and a TF treated, non-plated model. Thanks to the increased flatness of the face, we are getting unparalleled spin from even the plated model. With the non-plated model, you get the same great feel without worrying about rust or the short lifespan of your wedge. The original "MT-28" wedge was based and built around opinions of the pros. This time, we based our development around even further advice from the pros with more know-how packed in than ever before. With a lot of our tests with pros in the past, they are usually very hesitant to use a club, but this time we heard from a lot of pros that they would be willing to use it in a tournament right away! I really think with this wedge that we have our best balance of spin and usability.

MT-28 J.SPEC Design Lead, Muneyuki Matsuyoshi

We demanded the highest spin characteristics and an "automatic" wedge
The MT-28J.SPEC was designed to fulfill the demands for "pure" wedge features and a club that felt "automatic". The face and grooves, of course, are made with the same mirror-face milling and carving techniques as the MT-28V3, so it features the same powerful spin. But in addition to that, we really focused on making this wedge a lot more comfortable to use. For example, we made it a lot more forgiving on slightly chunked or thinned shots to keep consistent results and spin. That is a really big part of this wedge.
To talk about some concrete design changes, first there’s the overall shape of the head which we tried to keep from being too sharp. To give a more relaxing feel when holding the club, we gave it a slightly larger head size and shortened the neck a bit. Also, with a touch added to the sole width, we’ve managed to gain that comfort balance between looks and use. The problem we encountered with this design, however, was that this lowered the CG and created issues with undercutting the ball or missed shots. What we did?and this is where the J.SPEC name comes from?is adjust the shape of the back face. We cut out a section of the sole on the back face to change weight distribution and kept the CG from going too low. This cut-out was the key for achieving our CG positioning and satisfying our goals for design and functionality. What you get is an extremely stable club that’s easy to use and gives you that “automatic” spin.

MT-28V2 Design Lead, Muneyuki Matsuyoshi

The high performance wedge with unsurpassed spin characteristics
The wedge that was originally custom made for a single pro but spread through word of mouth and was number 1 in usage on the Japan Pro Tour for 3 years running was the original MT-28. With the help and advice of a number of tour players, we implemented a few minor changes and created the MT-28V2.
The biggest change from the original MT-28 is the flattening of the sole for better contact. What this does is it helps absorb contact not at a point, but over the length of the sole, stabilizing impact and adding consistency to the spin rate and distance.
Also, we altered the head shape to make it look a bit smaller and suit the preferences of most tour pros. Another change is the slightly more rounded toe and adjustment of the ball contact point. Bringing the position in slightly provides more flexibility in squaring up the face and gives added playability.
The MT-28V2 is offered in both plated and non-plated finishes, but for the plated version, we have gone with a bead-blasted finish. This not only reduces glare off the club head, but also makes alignment easier when opening the face away from the target line. We kept this kind of thing in mind in the design of the V2 and are very happy with the results.
There are a number of high performance wedges out there, but when you factor in spin characteristics, ease of address, playability, and so on, there really is no comparison. The MT-28V2 has set the standard to beat and we are more than happy to offer it to all the golfers out there.
■ MT-28V2
It can be said that the forerunner in the current battle for the best wedge among competing makers is the original MT-28. Reflecting the needs of tour pros, the MT-28V2 was born. The legendary spin and highly adaptable form have evolved even further. This is the wedge that makes the pro spin possible for any golfer.
